What matters in Armagh

  • Roofs and wiringIn the city, Georgian and Victorian terraces around The Mall and the cathedrals sit alongside post-war estates and newer housing on the edges. Out of town it is mostly detached houses, bungalows and farmhouses, where a shed or outbuilding can offer more usable roof than the house. Older stone buildings get a closer look at the roof structure and slates before we choose fixings.
  • Getting to youArmagh is reached from Larne by the M2 and M1, then the last stretch by A-road. We serve it from our Larne base for surveys, installs and aftercare, and book each visit with you in advance.

Planning and permissions

Armagh city centre is a conservation area with a high concentration of listed buildings, including those around The Mall. Panels on a building there need planning permission, and a listed building also needs listed building consent. Outside the centre, roof panels on an ordinary house are usually permitted development. Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council decides, and we check your property's status before we quote.

Armagh questions

Can I put solar panels on a house in Armagh's conservation area?

Yes, but only with planning permission, and with listed building consent as well if the building is listed. We check the property's status before we quote and tell you up front if permission is needed, before you spend money on a design. Panels on a rear slope that cannot be seen from the street have less visual impact, which the council will weigh, but the decision is the council's.

Can you fit solar on a farm shed or orchard building?

Yes. A large shed roof can take more panels than a house, and some farm buildings have a three-phase supply that allows a bigger system. We check the roof structure and the supply at survey, and size the system to what the farm uses while the sun is up, such as cold stores, pumps or workshops, rather than to the roof area.

Do you cover the villages around Armagh, or only the city?

Both. We cover Richhill, Loughgall, Markethill, Keady and the countryside around them. If you are in south Armagh, near Crossmaglen or Newtownhamilton, our Newry page covers your area, and Portadown and Lurgan are on our Craigavon page.
