How solar installation works

Seven steps from first estimate to being paid for your exports.

  • Free survey
  • Fixed written quote
  • NIE paperwork handled
  • Part of the B9 Energy group, in renewables since 1992

From estimate to export payments

Two steps are yours. We do the rest.

  1. Estimate or quote

You send a postcode and a recent bill. We model your roof.

    More about this step

Use the instant estimate for a first idea, or the quote form to start a survey booking. Neither commits you to anything.

  2. Free survey

We visit to check the roof, shading and consumer unit.

    More about this step

An engineer checks roof structure and covering, shading through the day, your consumer unit, earthing and cable routes. This is what makes a fixed price possible.

  3. Fixed written quote

After the survey we send the system, generation estimate and price.

    More about this step

One page: the system, a generation estimate for your roof, the price with nothing excluded and a payback based on your consumption.

  4. G98 notification or G99 application

We handle the NIE Networks paperwork. G98 is notified within 30 days of commissioning; for G99 NIE aims to issue an offer within three months.

    More about this step

Systems up to 3.68 kW per phase are notified under G98 after commissioning. Larger systems need G99 approval before connection, which adds lead time. See the G98 and G99 guide.

  5. Installation

    1–2 days

Scaffolding up, system in, tested. Usually 1–2 days for a home.

    More about this step

Most domestic solar installations take one to two days. Scaffolding goes up the day before and comes down a day or two after.

  6. Commissioning and handover

We set up monitoring and register manufacturer warranties.

    More about this step

We walk you through the system and issue your electrical certificates and warranty documents.

  7. Export registration

You register with your supplier to be paid for exports.

    More about this step

Power NI requires MCS accreditation for export payments on solar PV. Check its current terms before you order. Details are in our export payments guide.

What you'll need

  • A recent electricity billIt shows your usage and tariff.
  • Roof accessWe survey the roof on site.
  • A photo of your consumer unitIt helps us spot upgrades early.

Questions about the process

How long does the whole process take?

Typically four to six weeks from survey to switch-on for a standard home install notified under G98. Systems needing a G99 application take longer because NIE Networks must approve before connection, and it aims to issue a connection offer within three months.

Do you charge for the survey or quote?

No. Surveys and quotes are free and carry no obligation. If your roof is not suitable, we will tell you at survey stage.

Will I need scaffolding?

For virtually all pitched-roof installs, yes. It is a working-at-height requirement and it is included in the quoted price.

Who registers my export payments?

You do, with your electricity supplier, once the system is commissioned and NIE Networks has been notified. We hand over the paperwork you need.

Get a quote for your home

Send us your postcode and a recent bill. We'll model your roof and tell you whether solar is worth it there. If it is, we survey and give you a fixed written price.
